*Upgrading from earlier versions*
If you use a version earlier than 7, you will first need to convert your
DD.DBS file to a NEWDD.DBS using CNVTO7.EXE, then convert the NEWDD.DBS to
a GSGDD.DBS with CNVTO8.EXE. Simply copy all files to the directory that
contains the database and type CNVTO7 at the DOS prompt. It will create a
new file called NEWDD.DBS that is compatible with the version 7. Afterwards
type CNVTO8. This will convert the NEWDD.DBS to a GSGDD.DBS, which is used
by version 8D. If all goes well, you can delete the DD.DBS and NEWDD.DBS
files. If you are using Disk Database 7, all you will need to do is use
the file CNVTO8.EXE to create a GSGDD.DBS.
*How to use Disk Database 8D*
To load Disk Database 8D, type DSKDBF from the DOS prompt. An
introductory message will appear, then the database file (if present) will
be loaded. A status bar with the number of files in the database and the
default drive will be displayed at the bottom of the screen and a
horizontal menu will be displayed at the top.

To execute any of these commands, simply press highlighted letter.
Pressing f1 will display a help screen which briefly lists the commands and
their functions. An invalid keypress on any menu will cause the system to
beep.
*The Commands*
The following describes how to use the Database's various functions:
*Add - A
The add function allows you to make new entries to the database by
reading from a disk or manually entering the information. If disk is
selected, the default drive will be read (see config). Highlight the files
to be added with the space bar. The PageUp and PageDown keys will move to
the next page of files read from the drive. Tagall(CTRL+T) and
Untagall(CTRL+U) options are also available. When making manual entries
please be sure to press return after typing in all information before
pressing CTRL+A to ensure that the data will be entered completely.
Press the escape key to exit the Add window, or to abort an entry.
*Sort - S
This option will allow the user to choose the key field for the sorting
of the database records. File will sort alphabetically by the file name.
Disk will sort in numerical order according to the disk number of the
record.
*Edit - E

Edit allows the user to examine database records and to manipulate the
information. Typing 's' will prompt you to enter a search string. If a
file containing this string is found in the database, it will be highligted
at the top of the Edit window. To find the next file containing this
string, type 's' again and press return. To re-sort the database while in
Edit mode, press 'f' to sort by filename or 'd' to sort by disk number.
Press CTRL+V to toggle comment display mode. Records may be changed or
deleted in the edit window. To alter a record, move the highlighted bar to
the file you wish to change and press return. The old entry will be
displayed above a window which will allow you to make changes to the
recorded information. Be sure to press return after completing all changes
to ensure that the data will be changed correctly in the database. Press
CTRL+A to accept changes. The space key tags or untags files to be
printed using the Print/Selected option (see print for more details).

The program format may be customized using the configuration menu. Six
options are available from this menu:
Default Drive: Allows user to select drive to add files from.
Sub Directory: Toggles weather or not to read all files in sub
directories on a disk.
when adding. If this is "N", only main directory files will be
read into memory.
Current Disk#: Displays and allows user to alter the current number
to be recorded along with newly added files.
Check Snow: This option will eliminate the "snow" effect on CGA
monitors.
Change Volume: Alters the volume label of the disk in the default
drive to match that of the current disk# (see disk# above).
To save the configuration to disk press 's'.
*Print - P
Selecting print will prompt the user to select the number of print
columns as above and will allow the printer codes to be changed as well.
The printing options availible are: 1 Column with comments, 2 Columns, 3
Columns, and 7 Columns. All database records will be printed in sorted
order. Note that the order of the sort will be printed verticaly. You
have the option of printing a report of files that you tag when you are in
the Edit mode. This will print in 1 column mode with comments.
*Save - V
This function will save all database records to a file called GSGDD.DBS.
*Exit - E
When Exit is selected, if any changes have been made in the database file
the user will be asked if the current database file should be saved. If
the answer is no, the system will issue a warning and repeat the question.
After the database has been saved (or not saved), the system will return to
DOS.
*Mode - M
When Disk Database is executed, it automatically uses the highest screen
mode available to your computer. If, however, you wish to use the mode you
were in when Database was loaded, simply press M. Sorry, but you may not
change modes once records have been added to the database.
*Special Thanks to:
*Ralph B. Gilbert for your suggestions, some of which have been added to
this program.
*MY son Jeffrey Gold for writing this help file.
I hope you find this program useful for your cataloging needs.
